The Talisman

The Talisman is a rather strange restaurant, it is loved by some and hated by others. I'm not too sure why. Firstly where: It's in Karen, on the Ngong road, by the Karen Dukas, up towards Windy Ridge, on the right. They often seem to want you to park your car outside the gate, there is usually room inside.

If you want to eat in the restaurant, you will need to put up with the fact that the waitors will try to ignore you until you jump into their faces. It's probably a good idea to just go and look for a table that's free, it'll at least get their attention. Otherwise you could stand by the door for a long time.

The bar area is quite small but it's friendly enough. There are people that think there may be an odd clientele who have rather expensive habits in white powders. I've no idea if that's true. It could be said though that there are more glitzy handbags in the Talisman than in most places.

The food is, in general, good. Don't have falafel unless you like your food dry, as it only comes with tahini and no humus or anything soggy. As far as I can remember everything else was good. It does take a long time to come. They have new things on the menu regularly. Occasionally they have live music which is really good.

Why not try it if you have the time. This claims to be the phone number 88 32 13. It would probably be a good idea to book in advance, maybe that would get the waiters' attention when you get there.

I recently visited the Talsiman restaurant in Karen, and although I was there for a very rushed dinner I had such a wonderful experience that I felt compelled to check out what else I could find out about the place on the net. As my evening there left me with such a good impression you can imagine how surprised I was to read the negative comments you had posted. I found the establishment enchanting ; from the decadent feta samosas to the delicious irish coffee that I quickly enjoyed after my meal. The service, ambience and decor was the best all round combination that I have ever seen in a restaurant in Africa. When we arrived we were given a warm welcome by the owner Charlie Cameron, who even personally escorted us to our table and made sure that a waiter was on his way to serve us.
At a busy time of day like dinner, I thought each course arrived in reasonable time, and that every other customer in the place looked happy in their situation. I will definately be returning there soon.

I dropped in for lunch snacks on a quiet mid-week day. We sat outside on the verranda and our waiter was with us with the menus almost immediately. I can vouch for the feta samosas and satay chicken, and the potoatoe chips ordered for my 13 year old nephew were the best I've had in ages. Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. It was a shame we had to dash off to the airport so were unable to make it a relaxing experience but the staff produced the bill as soon as we asked for it so we were not delayed.

The food is great but a little pricy and the service is reasonable. The main problem is the characters who hang out in the small bar area - most seem to be local whites who seem to have had too much to drink which spoils the place for me!

Hi, I am an American who recently visited Kenya on holiday. I had seen the Talisman mentioned along with other Nairobi restaurants in the following article '36 Hours in Nairobi' from the New York Time:

    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=travel&res=9801E0D71031F93BA25750C0A9619C8B63

I decided to have a meal there and had a great evening. The place was very busy, but me and my colleague were seated and had our orders in within about ten mins of arriving. Both the a la carte menu and the days specials were varied and looked to have some delicious dishes, both Kenyan and international, but I decided on the famous 'Fetta and Coriander Samosas' and a Thai coconut and chicken dish, which I can't remember the name of, but I do rememberthat it was DELICIOUS! The final bill for the night for two people was perfectly reasonable (including a good bottle of wine) and I definately recommend the restaurant to anyone visiting Nairobi soon!

I also am surprised about the negative comments posted concerning the Talisman.

I am a Kenyan who has been to enough restaurants and what I can say is and I haven't seen anywhere as lovely and homely as Talisman. I can recommend few restaurants and lounges and Talisman is one of them. It is a small homely place where anyone feels at home the moment you get into the door.

They have wonderful steak, the food and drink presentation is executed well, the cappuccino is really nice, they have very kind staff, the owners check up to see what you need and if you are okay.
The decor is breathtaking..... Simple and rustic.
Oh, and I love the cloak rooms....so homely.

I remember a while ago, my friend’s boyfriend had a birthday and I suggested Talisman for a surprise dinner with friends. It was wonderful. We took the cake early in the day as we did the booking. They set for us a table by the fireplace and they took care of our surprise really well.

I advice that you book early in advance to avoid any inconveniences. Go there with an open mind and empty stomach…. Experience the rare gift of great food they have to offer.
